Do you have a go-to nail shape, or do you change according to your mood or occasion? Read on to discover the most popular nail shapes, what they may say about you, and how to achieve the perfect shape.

Round Nails: Classic Elegance

The round nail shape is a timeless classic that suggests a preference for subtle styles and a timeless wardrobe.

How to : Make sure the sidewalls are of equal length, perfectly straight but tapered in slightly (at the same angle on each side) toward the centre line.  At the free edge, the arc from both sides of the centre line to the sidewalls should be more dramatically curved until a rounded appearance is achieved. Always use the nail file from the underside of the nail, so you can see what you are doing. Work from the centre line to the sidewalls on each side and make sure the arc of the curve is the same from both sides of the centre line to the sidewalls.

Square Nails: Bold and Experimental

If you rock square nails, you’re usually bold and adventurous, embrace vibrant colours and explore nail art.

How to : Make sure that the sidewalls are of equal length, perfectly straight and parallel to each other. At the free edge, the angle from both sides of the centre line to the sidewalls should be at 90°.

Oval/Almond Nails: Modern Sophistication

If you lean towards oval or almond shapes, you may have a taste for modern elegance and appreciate quality.

How to : Make sure the sidewalls are of equal length (short in this case), perfectly straight but tapered in slightly (at the same angle on each side) toward the centre line. The angle of the arc from the centre line to the sidewalls should be at 45°.  The centre point and all other angles should be gently softened from the underside of the nail using a rocking motion with the nail file. Nothing should look sharp otherwise that’s the Stiletto shape.

Squoval Nails: Simple and Elegant

Striking the perfect balance between rounded and square shapes, these appeal to those who prefer a classic yet elegant style.

How to : Make sure the sidewalls are of equal length, perfectly straight but tapered in slightly (at the same angle on each side) toward the centre line. At the free edge, the arc from both sides of the centre line to the sidewalls should be very gently curved and not straight across. Use your nail file from the underside of the nail and gently soften or ‘round’ (use no pressure) each corner off by using a gentle rocking motion.

If you’re not sure what shape to go for, mirroring the shape of your cuticle will create a naturally flattering look. For precise shaping and long-lasting results, consider using a Crystal Nail File, designed to glide effortlessly along the nail edge and seal the tips to help prevent splitting and peeling at the tips. With a 25-year guarantee for the surface to never go dull, it's the only nail file you'll ever need!

Whether you prefer classic elegance or modern sophistication, the key is to find a nail shape that speaks to your personal style and complements your hands. Experiment with different shapes to discover your perfect match and elevate your nail game to the next level.
