Nail Art for Beginners: A Cute Heart Design

February 06, 2025
Written by Leighton Denny

If you’re new to the world of nail art, don’t worry! It’s easier than you think, and with just a few simple tools, you can create stunning designs. One of the easiest nail art ideas to start with is a cute heart detail. Here’s a step-by-step guide for a beginner-friendly heart nail art design.

What You Need:

A toothpick (or bobby pin for a bigger heart design)

A neutral-coloured base coat polish

A contrasting nail polish colour

A clear top coat polish

Step-by-Step Guide:

Apply the Base Colour - Start by applying your base colour to your nails. For this design, we’ve chosen Nail Illuminator Blush, a soft, neutral shade. Apply two coats for best results—this helps to reduce chipping and ensures longer wear.

Create the Heart Design - Once your base colour is completely dry, it’s time to create the heart! Take the brush out of the polish and scoop the end of your toothpick into your nail polish to get a blob (we’ve chosen Plush Pink for a fun pop). It’s best to practice on paper first to get a feel for size etc.

(1) Place a small blob on the left-hand side of your nail

(2) Place another blob next to it, on the right-hand side

(3) Use the toothpick to drag the polish from the right blob downwards towards the centre of the two blobs, forming the right side of the heart.

(4) Repeat the same with the left blob, pulling the polish toward the centre to form the left side of the heart.

Once you’re finished, you should have a cute heart shape in the centre of your nail.

Apply a Top Coat - Once your designs are completely dry, apply a clear top coat. This not only gives your nails a gorgeous shine but also blends the design together. Again, be sure to swipe the tips of your nails to help reduce chipping.

What's not to love about a cute heart on your nails? Whether you're practising for a special occasion or just adding a fun detail to your day, this design is a great starting place for beginners in nail art. Happy creating!
